Broadway Parodies LAH!

Last night skipped teaching my usual 7.35pm BODYCOMBAT in DU to watch this:

Staged at the Actors Studio in Bangsar Shopping Centre, the write-up in the Star Metro last month caught my attention and I decided to ajak gf for the Tuesday show as they have 20% discount for mid-week shows.

The show started at 8.30pm and what you get is 2-hour-spoofs of famous songs from... you guess it... Broadway musicals. I totally dig "Bomoh of the Bursa", sung to the tune of "Phantom of the Opera" it was really good! Others that was really funny was "Aiyo"("Hi Ho" from Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs), "Damansara"("Oklahoma") and Douglas' rendition of "I just want to be a dame" and "I'm off to Genting in the morning".

They have quite a good cast, led by Douglas Lim and my fellow Penangite Joanne Kam Poh Poh. Watch out for Doreen Tang, Cheryl Tan and Glamorique Arshad(how do you pronouce his name anyway?).

The show is on nightly 8.30pm till 2 June and on 3 June the show is at 3pm. Tickets are available at the box office in BSC. So if you have finished watching Pirates of the Carribean, Shrek the Third, Blades of Glory, and waiting for Fantastic Four or Transformers, do give our local lads some support. It will be money worth spent. For more info, click here

Invitations to Wedding

I've recently received 2 wedding dinner invitations, one from my cousin and the other from his mom.... Alright, his mom is not getting married too. Just that my aunt is throwing her own wedding dinner for him.

Anyhow, my cousin's invitation is for Sat July 7 while my aunt's dinner is the following night. The weird thing is... My cousin is inviting me alone while my aunt's invitation included gf. I check OCD's invitations and they were similar, i.e. one says him only and the other include "& partner". It's not that he's got anyone to bring but just weird that my cousin & aunt do not seem to understand that if we were to go back to Penang for dinner with our respective partners, tak kan we leave our partner at home on Saturday night while we attend the wedding. Since the two invitations came together, probrably they should've discuss together, either you invite the partners for both dinners or you don't invite at all....

Luckily, gf is going to Geneva and won't be going back with me. Otherwise, maybe have to drop her in Batu Feringghi for night shopping while I feast....

Out of the norm

Yesterday was "crazy-4-class" Tuesday and by the time I dragged myself to Damansara Uptown for my last BODYCOMBAT® class, I wasn't really into the mood to teach... not to mention, my 3rd class was BODYATTACK® in The Curve. Then after swiping my card to enter the gym, I proceeded to the front desk to sign my name on the class registeration sheet. To my surprise, there were 33 members who signed up for the class and the full capacity is 35(final count: 34).

My first response to the regulars was, "Eh, today is not Friday and my name is not Calvin... how come so many people?" My 2nd response was "Have they mistaken DU for Menara Manulife?"

Since so many members have come to attend my class, I was instantly all fired-up and did the class of my life. End results: Members had a great time and today I have sore legs from working too hard.

Yeah, it's always fun to teach to a full capacity....

I've been beaching around lately

Last week finally made use of the free voucher I won from Red FM, 3D2N stay at Merang Suria Resort in Kuala T'ganu.

Merang Suria Resort

As we reach KT quite early, we couldn't check in. So, we left our luggage at the front desk and went to town for a walk. The first place we went was central market near the pier.

Pasar Payang

the pier

Looks like the flag has been around since Merdeka

The french-inspired palace was just around the corner.

Istana Maziah

Dataran Maziah, right outside the istana

From there, we walked to Kampung Cina. Kuala Terengganu itself isn't that big but because of the weather and a pair of newly untested shoes(gf's), it was quite a walk to the place.

Quite a small area with nothing much to see.

We went back to the resort around 4 and finally got to rest our tired legs.

The next day was the highlight was the trip. We took a boat to Pulau Redang from the Merang Jetty.

the jetty

The journey was about an hour and there we found paradise on earth. The place we landed on was Pasir Panjang.

picture perfect

I've never seen such clear sea water before. Back in Penang, our sea water looks like air longkang.... the visibility in the water is about 3-4 metres.

The first time ever... topless pic on this blog

The fishes are no strangers to human swimming with them. In fact, the moment we stop swimming, they would swim close to us... Apparently they are used to human feeding them,

Later we were taken to the marine park in Pulau Pinang(not the state).

Overcrowded with people, it wasn't as nice as Pasir Panjang.

You still see clear water with fishes, plus something not so pleasant....

Dead corals along the beach and in the water.

We still prefer Pasir Panjang to the marine park. Because of that, the marine park got a thumb down review from gf.

Still beautiful, nonetheless....

The next day was spent mucking around doing nothing much, though we actually walked for 30 minutes from the resort to buy ice-cream at the petrol station. Crazy but doable... just have to put more sunblock next time.

Regrets

Recently during our holiday trip, I was asked by gf if I've got any regrets in life.

In spite of some a handful of silly mistakes when it comes to my relationships with my exes, I don't have any regrets on that area of my life.

I do have 2 regrets about my studies.

Coming from the best school in Penang - some say Malaysia- Chung Ling High School has its own shortcomings. Our school excels in science and somehow we were led to believe science stream is the way to go in life. Those who did well in SRP(now PMR) would automatically go in the Science stream in Form 4 while those who were sleeping through Form 3 who did poorly were sent to the Commerce stream.

I did relatively well and so I was in the Science stream. A couple of my class mates applied to be in the Commerce stream and I didn't. At that point of time, I didn't think much of my future and what career path I wanted to pursue. One big mistake...

I bombed in Chemistry, Physics & Add. Maths and barely surviving Biology. By the time I realised I was in the wrong stream, it was already too late. And so my Form 4 & Form 5 science teachers had a traumatic time educting me. Pity them....

Fortunately, I managed to do okay in SPM and went on to Form 6 and immediately I switched to Arts Stream. However, I still didn't know what I wanted to be. The ideas that popped out were lawyer, hotel management & human resource management.

Anyhow, I ended up in University of Sydney studying first accounting & human resource management. I found out that Accounting wasn't the subject I like so I asked for a transfer and then I discover a field of study I've never thought of before.

Archeology.

Why archeology, you may ask.... History is always one of my stronger subjects in school all the way to Form 6. I love to read history books so much that I usually finished reading my text books way before my history teachers could finish half of them. I am especially fascinated by the process of development of the world's civilizations and religions. So the idea did cross my mind to switch to archeology instead - it will be a pursue of passion. One thing held me back though.... what would I be doing as an archeologist?

Become this?

Not sure how my dad would react if I were to tell him I wanted to be Indiana Looi, so I made the decision based on logic: I switch another area of interest and graduated with a degree in political science & industrial relations.

Even now, I'm still drawn by historical stuff and gf is amazed that I can recall a lot of things I've learned from history books. If only I could turn back time....

Do you have any regrets you wanna share?
