This simple story from Yasmin Ahmad tells the relationship between a chinese boy and a malay girl truly reflects the community of which I live in. The nation of Malaysia is almost 48 years old but cultural and racial interaction is still lacking. Malays normally hang around with malays, chinese with chinese, and indians with indians. More effort is required if we want to break the wall that is separating us from one another.
I asked a friend of mine(a chinese) how many malay friends he has and he said "none". As for me, I wouldn't have any malay friend if I wasn't working in a muti-racial company. I think it's a good idea to have the Khidmat Negara programmes for the school leavers so that we can have more interaction among the various races. I look forward to the day we can have a true Bangsa Malaysia.
